Security Update - New Initiatives

Submitted by TMCC Security Committee

In mid 2018 The Houston Police Department implemented The National Incident-Based Reporting System or NIBRS. This system not only counts more incidents, it also includes more incident types which were not available in previous statistics. Therefore, putting 2019 side-by-side to previous years may not be the most ideal comparison.

In recent months we have been taking a fresh new look at the approach within TMCC (sections 5 - 14). The TMCC Security Committee, along with some amazing neighbors, met for a brainstorming session back in October where over 50 ideas were generated to potentially help improve the safety in our neighborhood. In January we met again to decide on a few strong, and focused starting points.

The results are as follows, but we need your help!

Restart the HPD Sponsored Citizen Patrol:
If you have a vehicle and can give a few hours per month please consider joining us by being a HPD trained patroller. Citizen Patrollers are the additional eyes and ears the police can count on to make our community a safe place to live and work. For more information click the button below!

Increased Security Communications:
This initiative will expand the amount of tips, campaigns and alerts that help keep us safe. In order for this to be a success we want to help educate the community on how to report an incident or crime, no matter how big or small. Houston uses the crime reports as a means to determine how many officers are placed on patrol in and around our neighborhood. Listed below are examples of the types of incidents one might encounter and the appropriate reporting resource.
9-1-1 is for Emergencies only:
- A thief in the act of stealing something or another crime is ongoing.
- If someone is seriously injured, having a heart attack or a similar urgent medical issue.
HPD Non-Emergency number: (713) 884-3131
- Theft or Property Damage under $5000
- Coming home to a burglary which has previously occurred.
- Finding a burglary/theft of a motor vehicle incident in the morning but from the night prior.
Make Reports Online:
- A report for suspicious things like a prowler, a speeding vehicle, excessive burglaries and thefts in an area, or even a vacation watch for your home. Online Report Slip
- Theft or Property Damage under $5000 Online Crime Report

Possible Camera Installation:
We will be assessing the feasibility of either trialing a camera installation or providing recommendations for camera installs. This one is still in the very early stages so more to come!

Super Neighborhood Security Team:
We will also be reaching out to some of our nearby neighborhoods to gauge interest in starting a super neighborhood security team where we can create means to routinely share information with one another.
