Requests for Area Traffic Studies

Submitted by Peter Davies, Secretary

Two requests are being prepared by the TMCC Board to be sent to the City of Houston Traffic Department to request traffic calming studies.

The first target area is around Sinclair Elementary School, because of concerns for the amount and speed of the traffic, especially along Ella Boulevard at Grovewood. As the result of changing demographics, there has been an increase in children in the neighborhood, resulting in more pedestrian and bicycle traffic, as parents escort them to school.

The second area is Shirkmere, south of West 11th Street, in Section 5 where drivers cut through the neighborhood to access Hurst Street. This section of roadway is posted as “No Thru Trucks.” There is a combination of commercial truck, church and construction traffic.  Some of the persistent truck traffic includes tankers from SouthWaste, which hauls liquid sewage and spent cooking grease for treatment and disposal into the City of Houston’s sanitary sewer system.

The possible outcomes of the studies would be for the City to employ traffic calming measures to reduce the overall speed and volume of traffic in the areas.  Some residents in Section 5 have advocated for the closure of Hurst Street at Shirkmere. We will keep the TMCC Members updated on all efforts.
